Northmead resident leaves legacy in swimming community

Northmead resident Steve Botha, a leader in the Gauteng swimming community, died at the age of 46 on August 15.

His life partner, whom he spent 14 years with, Carla Gosling, said Steve suddenly died after suffering a heart attack.
“He was a fit, active man and there were no signs of the [heart] attack,” she said.
Steve was born in Benoni and spent his whole life here.
Steve was the vice-president of Aquatic Gauteng, president of Eastern Gauteng Aquatics, a member of the Swimming South Africa’s technical committee and vice chairperson of Soul Swimming.
He also served as the chairperson for Benoni High School’s governing body, which is the high school he attended in his youth.
Carla said he treated her children as his own.
His eldest brother, Gavin Botha, said everything Steve did was for Jarred and Keira Gosling and his legacy will live on through them.
Carla characterised Steve as a humble, humorous, logic and calm man.
“He was always positive and there was never a single problem that he couldn’t get ‘sorted’, as he would say,” she said.
“He respected everybody, he made time for everybody and everyone who knew him would turn to him for advice,” she added.
Gavin said he was a happy, selfless man who touched the lives of many people.
He explained success is not always measured by money saying that about 700 people attended Steve’s funeral.
The funeral took place on August 24 at the Northfield Methodist Church.
He is survived by his mother Ann Botha, his two brothers, Keith Botha and Gavin Botha, his life partner Carla Gosling and their two children Jarred Gosling and Keira Gosling.
