Man injured after possibly being hurt by stray bullet

Benoni SAPS is investigating two cases of attempted murder after a man was allegedly shot during a shoot-out between the police and three suspected criminals yesterday (September 14).

The man was found in a white Hyundai H100 on Princess Avenue with a bullet wound on his back following the shooting which occurred on Woburn Avenue at around 11.30am.

According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, two crime prevention officers were patrolling at Northmead Square earlier on the day, when they saw a green BMW being driven suspiciously slowly around the parking lot.

“Suddenly, a Nissan Qashqai with three men followed the BMW,” said Sekele.

“As police were monitoring the two vehicles, the vehicles drove down O’Reilly Merry Street.”

Sekele added that police followed the vehicles all the way to Voortrekker Street.

Then the BMW turned on Kemston Avenue and the Nissan Qashqai continued along Voortrekker Street.

“Police continued to follow the Nissan Qashqai. When police tried to stop the driver, one of the men took out a gun, pointed it at the police and started shooting from the back window,” she said.

Police fired back at the alleged suspects and the vehicle sped off towards Harrison Street.

“Police however, lost sight of the vehicle,” said Sekele.

The BMW was later found at Lakeside Mall and police confiscated two cellphones from the vehicle.

Upon further investigation, police found that both vehicles are involved in various criminal activities such as bank follow-home crimes.

The man was transported to the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

No arrests have been made yet.
