Picket held at Actonville SAPS

The DA head in Benoni, Michele Clarke, together with Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail, led a picket outside the Actonville Police Station on September 9.

The DA demanded that police act to curb what they say is the escalating rate of drugs, substance abuse and the ongoing violence against women, children and vulnerable groups.

The picket was joined by DA supporters and concerned residents demanding police visibility, especially around schools to deter drug dealers from attempting to sell illicit substances to learners.

Clarke and Ismail handed over the memorandum to the station commander of the Actonville SAPS, Col Stanley Nevhuhulwi.

The memorandum listed the following:

• The re-introduction of specialised police units to deal with crimes – in particular the narcotics unit to deal with drugs and drug-related crimes.

• Police visibility around schools to deter drug dealers from attempting to sell illicit substances to learners.

• Unannounced frequent raids in facilities where drug dealers are suspected to trade.

• Proper investigations into police officers who are accused of colluding with drug dealers in the community.

• SAPS members to enforce protection orders when woman and children have been violently abused by perpetrators.

• The station commander to provide statistics around drug-related crimes, violence against woman and children as well as domestic violence; to include within these statistics the number of cases that have been successfully prosecuted.

• The station commander to ensure that when domestic violence cases are reported at the police station, that such cases are taken seriously and that the women reporting such cases are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Actonville SAPS spokesperson, Capt Pheello Mothapo confirmed that they received the memorandum and they are working on strategies to curb crime in the area.
