Criminal gets 53 years behind bars

A 29-year-old man was sentenced to 53 years’ imprisonment for murder, attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The sentence was handed down on August 25 in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

On August 1, last year, Michael Mthembu and his now late accomplice forcefully entered and robbed the Reclamation Group on Main Reef Road.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the men broke open a door and entered the premises.

A security officer shot the deceased. Mthembu shot back at the guard.

The security guard was not injured.

“Mthembu then pulled his injured friend into the car and they fled the scene.”

They took an unknown amount of money.

Mthembu was arrested shortly after the incident and his accomplice died on the back seat of the vehicle.

He was charged and found guilty of the murder of his accomplice.

Benoni SAPS station commander Brig Johan Jacobs commended Det-Const Wiseman Mavuso for his hard work on the case.
