Benoni’s community theatre ‘icon’ dies

Margaret Todd, who was involved in Protea Stage Productions (Benoni’s amateur productions), died on September 2.

“Benoni lost a community theatre icon,” said Protea Stage Productions’ vice-chairperson, Michael Brownhill.

“Margaret was a huge part of Protea Stage Productions, having been involved with the society for 45 years and holding the position of vice-chairperson for numerous years.”

Brownhill thanks Todd for her influence in his decision to direct productions.

“I found the ‘guts’ to start directing my own shows using all the techniques and skills she showed me over my 11 years with Protea,” Brownhill said.

“As many members of Protea will agree with me, she gave us all the knowledge and expertise one needs to truly appreciate and enjoy theatre.”

Brownhill added that her legacy is one to live up to.

“I will personally have a piece of me missing without her but will hope to live up to her standards for years to come through Protea Stage Productions,” he said.

“Margaret was loved by children and adults alike and will be sorely missed by us all.

“Rest well Margaret, watch down on us as we carry on the legacy you left us.”
