At least four involved in Benoni ATM bombing

An ATM was blown up and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen at the Boxer store in the Benoni CBD this morning (September 2).

Capt Ramothakhi Maqabe, the police’s Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, said the Voortrekker Street incident happened at about 7.30am.

“At about 6.30am, Fidelity security loaded the stand-alone ATM inside the Boxer store,” said Maqabe.

“At about 7.30am, about four suspects with rifles walked to the ATM and blew it up.”

The spokesperson said two shots were fired by the suspects as they were fleeing, but no injuries were reported.

He said an undisclosed amout of cash was stolen.

“It is not known whether the machine emits dye chemicals,” Maqabe added.

No arrests have been made.
