Four events for Child Cancer Awareness Month

Two women are taking September and Child Cancer Awareness Month by storm.

They have scheduled four fund-raising events throughout the month.

“All of the proceeds go directly to families affected by child cancer and although our primary goal is to cover medical expenses, we try to support these families wherever we can,” said Michelle Larsen, a Boksburg resident and member of the Cupcakes for Hope organisation.

Her fellow child cancer awareness activist and Northmead resident, Dawn Viljoen, is what the organisation calls a Cupcake Angel.

Viljoen is involved with Cupcakes for Hope as her daughter, Daniella Snyman (21), has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia for the

second time in five years last month.

Viljoen said she hopes to help families who don’t know how to deal with child cancer.

Cupcake Angels work hard to ensure the events are successful but more importantly, informative and fun.

“We want to raise awareness about the early stages of child cancer. Early detection is extremely important,” said Viljoen.

They are urging parents to be diligent when searching for signs of early child cancer.

•The first event took place on September 1 at Arbor Primary School and is known as an annual international Cupcake for Breakfast Day. Cupcakes were given to learners who were asked to bring a donation of R10.

•A blood drive will also be hosted by the duo in co-operation with the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) on September 9 at Arbor Primary School’s fun day.

Last year the drive collected almost 200 units.

“One unit can save three lives, so we saved 600 lives last year,” said Viljoen. This year’s goal is to collect over 200 units.

•Cupcakes for Hope is hosting a High Tea at the school on September 16 and according to Viljoen tickets sold out quickly.

•The main event is scheduled for the last day of September which will be national Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer Day.

Cupcakes for Hope use this day to sell cupcakes in local malls across South Africa.

Benonians are invited to show their support at any of these events and to buy a cupcake for only R10 in East Rand Mall on September 30.
