The sentenced was handed down on July 31 after Njabulo Xulu stabbed his friend to death in Daveyton on December 10, 2016.
He then fled the scene.
On December 12, 2016, Xulu handed himself over to police.
Daveyton SAPS spokesperson Capt Mesh Makole said Xulu and his friend were involved in an argument.
“It is alleged that jealousy and competition between the two taxi drivers led to the argument,” said Makole.
He is now serving his sentence in Modderbee Prison.
Daveyton SAPS station commander Col Nengal Chittiah commended the investigating officers involved in the case.
