Quilting is not just a hobby for grannies

Madison Samuel won second place at the 2017 Quilt Festival.

The St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls learner came second in the Intermediary category (Grade Five to Eight).
Samuel’s grandmother, Valerie Singh, is a retired school teacher and is accomplished at silk ribbon embroidery.
Singh felt that Samuel was a conscientious student who would possibly benefit from a hobby like sewing.
The 13-year-old’s first task was learning how to stitch fabric in straight lines which developed into a patch work quilt for her bed.
In 2016 she entered the Youth Block Challenge which is run by the South African Quilters Guild.
The competition gives young quilters an opportunity to show off their 40×40cm quilt, which must be explained by an inspired story.
As a novice quilter Samuel devoted many hours to the drawing and planning of her quilt.
It took many hours to create a story out of fabric.
Although she did not win any prizes for her ‘African in my eyes’ quilt last year, it did not break her spirit.
Instead, it inspired her to try again in 2017, under the theme ‘If I were…’
Samuel loves how a theme can ignite the imagination and spark an idea.
“Sewing is pure magic – it’s not just for grannies,” said Samuel.
The quilt she made was inspired by a story called, If I were a butterfly.
“If I were a butterfly, I would dance freely in Mother Nature’s playground, amongst the lush green leaves and insects,” she said
“So for me, a butterfly is a true symbol of freedom.
“I am not a butterfly – that’s for sure – but it is fun to fantasise about being a butterfly.”
