Illegal dumping a no-go in Benoni

Illegal dumping is a no-go in Benoni and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) wants any illegal dumping to be reported.

“A fine of R500 is due to anyone who is caught illegally dumping refuse,” said EMM spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.

“Illegal dumping is also a health hazard and contributes to rodent infestation.”

Community members who see this can report it to the Benoni depot on 011 999 6803/6725.

“Members can also take a photograph as proof,” Gadebe added.

The City Times contacted the councillors on July 7 asking about hot spots.

Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail responded with the following: Lancaster Road, Ansary, Caledon, Birmingham, Govender, Pursad and Singh streets to name a few.

“Residents, please let us work together on keeping our area clean,” Ismail said.

Airfield resident, Nico Martins said the park on Great North Road and Fifth Avenue is being utilised by taxi drivers and vendors.

“The taxi drivers stop at the park and clean their taxis of any refuse like empty bottles and so on,” Martins said.

“The refuse is then left on the land.

“There are vendors too who sell chips and sweets which school children buy and then leave their empty packets in the park.”

Martins said. When the wind is blowing, the refuse is blown onto their street.

“It is a daily struggle to clean the street,” he added before suggesting that more bins be placed in the park to avoid the littering.

“We would like to keep our area clean.”
