Effort to confront alleged drunk driver results in apparent assault

A suspected drunk driver will today meet with the man whom he apparently slapped at a Benoni petrol station on August 12.

Philip Stoneman, a church minister and chaplain, was at the Sasol filling station at the Rynfield Terrace Shopping Centre when he saw a “wasted” man enter the kiosk.

Stoneman called for assistance on the Crystal Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) radio network. He needed help to convince the man not to drive under the influence.

When the CPF arrived after about 10 minutes, Stoneman offered to assist the person.

“I went up to him with my hands in the air, and told him that I was not there to cause trouble and that I wanted to help him,” he said.

“The guy then backhanded me across the face.”

The motorist then sped off.

Although Stoneman was not injured, he said he wants the person to take responsibility for his drinking and driving.

“I was a chaplain with emergency services and I have been to scenes where alcohol has killed people,” he said.

Stoneman said the assailant sounded sincere in his apology when he made contact with him yesterday.

“He admitted that he had too much to drink and he sounded genuine.”

A case of common assault was opened at the Crystal Park Police Station.
