BCT golf day beneficiaries strike a chord

A “desperate” situation greeted Jaco Pretorius, branch manager of Buco Rietpan, at the Benoni SPCA on August 2.

The hardware outlet has partnered with the City Times for the third consecutive year in the annual Benoni City Times Buco Rietpan Charity Golf Day.

The Benoni SPCA and Manger Care Centre are this year’s beneficiaries – charities close to the manager’s heart.

Pretorius visited the local society’s premises in Lakefield to establish the scale of need at the charity.

Manager of the Benoni SPCA, Vicky Finnemore, explained some of the renovation needs, such as an upgrade to the wall of remembrance, puppy kennels, dog runs, and the run-down donkey enclosure and shelter, to name a few.

“This truly looks like desperation,” Pretorius remarked when walking through the facility.

“It is sad and tragic to see the state of this.

“Unfortunately you can’t fix everything immediately.”

Finnemore said there have been a lot of improvements to the facility, but more needs to be done.

An overwhelmed Pretorius committed to calculating the cost of each of the projects requiring attention at the SPCA, which will be above Buco’s contribution to the golf day.

He said the outlet will also donate excess building supplies.

The bill of quantities will enable the society to approach donors with a breakdown of the projects’ costs.

Pretorius said the Manger Care Centre is also a worthy charity, citing their effort to become self-sustainable through their projects which skill their residents and generate an income.
