Gauteng gets first new freeway in 40 years

Gauteng’s first new freeway in about 40 years may be completed by 2022.

According to the media liaison officer of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, Melitah Madiba, the PWV15 road will stretch 35.4km, from Kempton Park to the K146, near Zonkizizwe.

He said it will cross over the N17 and the N3.

“The PWV15 forms an integral part of the provincial and municipal road network,” said Madiba.

“Its construction will have significant socio-economic benefits in terms of job creation, stimulating the regional economy and supporting the OR Tambo Aerotropolis project.

“It will help to reduce traffic congestion, particularly on the N3, R21 and R24.

“The proposed freeway is central to the KZN-Gauteng freight link and will play a central role in facilitating freight traffic to the airport.”

When asked what the effects on traffic and property prices would be in the areas of construction of the road, Madiba said: “Any large scale infrastructure development project has a multiplier effect on property values in local economies.”

“The long-term socio-economic benefits will far outweigh the inconvenience caused in the short term by the construction of the freeway.”

Madiba further said the project is now in the planning stage and the department will communicate with the public during the public participation stage.

A press release by the department stated: “For the financial year 2017/18, the department has allocated an amount of R1.9-billion towards transport infrastructure.”

Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Ismail Vadi emphasised that the department has no plans to introduce e-tolling on its new routes.

At the time of publishing, it was unclear exactly what route the new highway would follow, but it is unlikely to be near Benoni.
