‘Dust bowl’ house won’t be sold – resident

A Norton Home Estates resident does not think he will ever be able to sell his house for as long as it remains a “dust bowl”.

Angelo and his wife Gina Samaklis are fed up with the state of a section of Bonnyvale Road.

“People use this road as an alternative to High Road and, because of the condition, drive twice to three times the speed limit to glide over the
potholes rather than drive slow and avoid them,” said Angelo.
In May, the road was graded, leaving about 800m of sand road, which is now leading to large amounts of dust settling on and in the house.
“They removed the tar and left us with a sand road and this is exactly where the problem lies,” said Angelo.
“… Our home is now covered in red sand, our pool is now a mud pool; we cannot breath in our own home.
“We cannot sell the house with this problem.
“There has been no water truck to spray the road down and keep the dust at bay.
“We have to employ extra labour to try and get a little order, but no sooner do we clean than the dust is back.”
Angelo said speedsters have no consideration.

Following a City Times enquiry to the EMPD, the metro police sent members to monitor the speed at which motorists were driving on the
road.
He said the metro was there for about an hour, but not during peak traffic times.
The annoyed resident said besides the fact that he needs to have his vehicles washed every day, he does not see anyone buying his house
until the road is tarred.
“We’ll never sell this house,” he said.
Ward 24 councillor Kabelo Mahonko said she has asked the Ekurhuleni Roads Department when the road will be tarred, but has not yet received feedback.
