Explosion heard across Benoni a mystery for now

It is unclear what caused the explosion which was heard in Benoni on the evening of July 30.

Some people commented on the Benoni Community Group that they heard the bang in MacKenzie Park, Rynfield, Morehill and Brakpan.

People were speculating that it may have been due to illegal mining.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah said police found no evidence that it is linked to illegal mining. He also said they were monitoring the situation.

In the past, the City Times reported on explosions emanating from The New Reclamation Group in Dunswart.

Speaking to the City Times on Monday morning, Byron Cochran, branch manager at the Dunswart site, said Sunday night’s explosion could not have been the fault of the group, as there had been no production on Sunday.

“I can say for a fact that it was not us because we did not operate yesterday. Saturday was the last time we operated,” said Cochran.

He said the surrounding community has been “a lot happier in the last three weeks” as the company has been working closely with locals to minimise disruptions caused by explosions.
