Charred remains of missing man found in Benoni

A man has been arrested after he led police to the charred remains of a person in Benoni on July 28, according to the police’s Brig Vishnu Naidoo.

The 34-year-old suspect will face a murder charge.

Police believe the body is a 24-year-old jockey.

“The young jockey was reported missing after he disappeared from the Turffontein Racecourse on July 24,” said Naidoo.

“Members of the National Crime Intelligence Unit provided the Booysens police with intelligence relating to a possible suspect.”

The man was arrested in Turffontein and led police to the body in Benoni.

“Upon arrival at the scene, police found the charred remains of the victim,” Naidoo said.

“Police will also conduct DNA analysis to confirm the identity of the victim.”

Naidoo said police believe the man was killed in Johannesburg.

He would also not reveal the location in Benoni where the body was found, saying it might compromise the investigation.

The suspect was due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today on a murder charge.
