Nobody hurt in New Modder fire

Nobody was injured and damage was limited to tyres in the storage area at the Bridgestone premises in New Modder after the premises caught fire on July 23.

The fire on Vermont Avenue was extinguished by 10pm and, by 11.30pm, the affected area was completely contained, according to Bridgestone.

“The fire brigade’s initial feedback on the probable cause of the tyre storage area catching alight is that a veld fire from outside the property spread onto the Bridgestone premises,” said Bridgestone South Africa’s CEO, Gavin Young.

“The Benoni premise refurbishes tyres used by off-highway equipment such as construction machinery.”

The City Times previously reported that nobody was injured during the fire and young confirmed this on Monday.

According to Young, Bridgestone is working with authorities to confirm the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire and to assess the damage.

“We would like to thank the fire brigade and community with assisting on the matter,” Young added.

The City Times is awaiting a response from Ekurhuleni emergency services regarding the matter.
