Boys cry ‘hysterically’ as dog dies

Benoni SPCA trainee inspector Shiven Bodasing was finishing up at the society’s premises late on July 21, when two boys of about 10 years of age came to the gate in tears, asking for assistance.

They had come from Etwatwa, taking about four or five different taxis along the way because they didn’t know the SPCA’s address.

“When I opened the gate for them, they came running inside, saying: ‘Help, my puppy is dying’,” he said.

“They had a greyhound puppy wrapped in a blanket,” said Bodasing.

“The puppy was gasping for breath and fluid was coming out of its nasal cavity.”

“They then put the pup on the table.

“Both of them were in tears and holding each other.”

While Bodasing was examining the dog, the animal had a seizure on the examining table.

After a closer inspection, Bodasing found that the animal’s airway had been completely occluded by fluid.

According to Bodasing, the dog was at the end stages of bilary and in a coma.

Given the condition of the dog, there was no way of treating it successfully.

The canine was euthanised immediately by the vet.

Once that was done, massive amounts of fluid flowed from the animal’s respiratory system.

Bodasing said the boys cried hysterically because they had received the dog only the day before from KwaZulu-Natal.

Once they were calm, the trainee inspector explained to them what had happened and why the pup had to have an injection.

According to Bodasing, the boys could not thank him enough for helping them.

“They told me that it hurt them to see the puppy suffering,” he said.

“I told them it was a good thing they made the effort to bring their pup and that they needed to inform others that the SPCA will always help those who truly need it.”
