Empowering the youth one programme at a time

The Child of Africa movement was started by Tshepo Molefe, on January 21.

The aim of the movement is to fight against teen pregnancy, crime, school dropouts, alcohol as well as drug addiction and abuse.

“As a centre we stand for education, art and recreation,” said Molefe.

The organisation was started by 12 members and has grown to 46 members between the ages of 14 and 35.

With the assistance of Woolworths, Molefe and his team are able to give vegetables to people in the Chief Albert Luthuli Park area.

Molefe said the organisation also runs a recreational centre that offers various learning programmes for young school dropouts and young adults.

“We teach them how to read and write, then refer them to ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training)

centres,” he said.

“We also find ways to develop the youth by encouraging them to attend workshops.”

In an attempt to keep the youth busy and away from the streets, the organisation offers activities such as drama, debate sessions, dance classes, music, choirs, poetry, artwork and chess.

Recreational sports activities like soccer, netball, volleyball, cricket, rugby and marathon races are also offered.

Molefe said future plans for the organisation include having a library for the community of Chief Albert Luthuli Park and Cloverdene.

“We would also like to have a Green House Shelter for abused children and women who cannot stay in their abusive households,” he said.

Molefe said by educating young men and women they are helping them to make informed decisions about their future.
