Lions Club of Benoni welcomes incoming president

The Lions Club of Benoni held their presidential induction on Sunday at Jerry’s Café on Pretoria Road.

The induction welcomed incoming president Tina Strachan and bid farewell to outgoing president Diane Crompton.

The programme consisted of the Lions Pledge, Lions Creed by Gillian Jones, toast to SA by Ian Knight, welcome to guests by Isobel Reyneke, toast to Lions Club International by Michelle Crellin, reply to toast for Lions Club International by George MacDonald and grace by Primrose Banks.

“Being a Lion means to have a feeling of family and support,” said Crellin.

Past district governor (PDG) George MacDonald gave the current record of Lions membership.

“The current membership is 1 445 591 thanks to the Lion leaders for the achievements,” he said.

“The year has come to an end, but the Lions’ work has not stopped.”

Crompton gave her report about the achievements over the past year.

“This was my second opportunity of serving my club as president,” Crompton said.

“Despite our club being small, our service projects have been considerable.”

Some of following achievements for the term 2016/2017 were mentioned:

•Donated Pick n Pay vouchers to the value of R1 000 each to purchase food for Heart Cry Ministries, Greater Benoni Child Welfare and Protea Park informal settlement.

•Supported Lingelethu Home of the Aged and Disabled with food until their closure.

•Provided benches and a wheelchair for residents of Rynpark 4 and 6.

•Donated R1 000 to Belvedere School for their academy prize giving and two tablets for the school raffle.

•Supplied packs to new mothers and babies at the Life Choice Pregnancy Centre.

•Conducted diabetes awareness testing for the general public.

•Supplied nine hearing aids to the community.

•Received the “District Hearing Aid Award” for 2016/2017.

 

She thanked David Featherston for raising R61 920 from book sales, assisted by Gillian Jones and Primrose Banks.

Jumble sales which were conducted by Jones raised R7 117; Jones was assisted by Charles and Jenny Metcalfe and their helper, Busi.

A golf day was held at the Benoni Country Club in memory of Gert Heyink which raised R58 500.

Various fellowship meetings were also held.

“My highlight of the year was my attendance at the advanced leadership workshop in Cape Town where I gained invaluable knowledge to be used in the future,” Crompton added.

“In my final meeting as president of this club, an honours roll was awarded to Jill Walden for her contributions to this club.”

MacDonald welcomed the 2017/2018 president, Strachan who also addressed lion members.

“I aim to increase membership during my year,” she said.

“And I am excited about the new projects as well as the ones that are already in the pipeline.”
