Rotarians recognise their finest

The Rotary Club of Benoni recently inducted its new president, Charmaine Williams.

The club also handed three individuals Paul Harris Fellowship awards for their service to the community.

Mark Pillai was given the award for his determination to serve communities and for never refusing to help someone.

The club recognised Venessa Moodley for her role in turning around the negative situation at Actonville Primary School, of which she is the principal.

Greg Stathacopoulos, who has been a member of the club for 26 years, received his second Sapphire award, which is equivalent to three Paul Harris Fellowship awards.

Stathacopoulos was recognised not only for all the work he does, but for managing to secure a donation of R400 000 from Mahindra South Africa to purchase and distribute 5 000 solar lamps.

Williams took over as president from her husband, Ian.

She said the club would focus especially on the community of Actonville this year, where a lot of support is needed.

Williams said the club is proud of and will continue to support its Rotakids and Interact clubs at Actonville Primary and Willowmoore High schools, as well as the reading programme at Actonville Primary.

She also pledged support for LifeLine Ekurhuleni.
