Benoni community to the rescue

What do you do if you have insects crawling over your lawn and you have no idea what they are?

Call a friend?

Google what they are?

Why not ask over 14 000 people who are members of the Benoni Community Group on Facebook? Shaneen Noel did.

If the 20-odd comments are anything to go by, then the insects are termites.

Shaneen Noel asked people what kind of insects these are.

And if you need them removed, one of the group’s members who deals with pest control, offers her services. She has posted a photo showing her branded vehicle and contact number.

Started in 2012 by Farrarmere resident Shaun Ferreira, the Facebook page offers a platform where people can share and request information.

“I originally got the idea from a What’sApp group I belonged to. It was a CPF crime-related group sharing crime issues in our community,” said Ferreira.

“A lot of members liked to chat or share information which was not crime related, which was a big issue and problem to the group.

“I approached admin and asked if I could start a group which was not crime related, but more of a community group, which I did.”

The group, which has not been monetised, has done so well that Ferreira has two people who help him with the administration of the page, as all posts have to be approved before they are posted.

Ferreira said his gardener now works a five-day week after he referred his services to members of the group.

“Thousands of people are being helped on this group daily and it’s just amazing to see how our community can help one another,” said Ferreira.
