Man gets 15 years for aggravated robbery

An 18-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, in the Benoni Regional Court.

The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Mitzi Schutte on July 5.

Bafana Benya was found to have robbed a 14-year-old boy of his cellphone on May 6.

Benya was arrested shortly after the crime was committed on Great North Road, in Farrarmere.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the victim was waiting for his mother to open the gate for him.

“While waiting, he was approached by Benya, who put a knife to his throat and demanded a cellphone,” said Sekele.

“The victim did exactly as he was told and handed over the cellphone.”

The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Sekele added that the victim and his uncle went to search for Benya, but did not find him.

On their way back, they spotted a police vehicle and stopped to inform the police about the incident.

A quick response by Sgt Louwtjie Bekker and Const Kenneth Mantsha led to the arrest of the man at the corner of Kei and Great North roads.

He is serving his sentence at Modderbee Prison.
