From Benoni to… Melbourne

Leighan Owen (36) was born in Benoni, but travelled a lot and decided to move abroad for safety reasons.

She now lives in Newham in Melbourne, Australia.

BCT: Tell us about your time in Benoni.

LO: Our first house was in Northmead but my main family home was in Farrarmere.

I attended Rynfield Primary and Benoni High schools. I then went to Damelin College in Johannesburg.

BCT: When did you emigrate?

LO: I left after I graduated from RAU (University of Johannesburg) in 2002.

I travelled a lot as a child and had good insight into what life was like in other countries.

I decided I didn’t want to settle down in SA as life was becoming unsafe.

BCT: What are your memories of Benoni?

LO: I have many fond memories of Benoni – mostly Benoni Northern’s Sports Club; my mother and I were both hockey players and spent most weekends at the sports club.

BCT: What is it like living abroad?

LO: I have lived in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.

At first it was difficult – I missed my family and friends, but I got used to it.

BCT: Are you married and do you have children?

LO: Yes, I am married and have two children, Rachel and Cameron.

BCT: What do you do for a living?

LO: I work as a database trainer for a real estate company.

BCT: What South African traditions do you still keep alive?

LO: Mrs Balls Chutney is always in the pantry as are boerewors and biltong from the SA shop.

BCT: What do you like and dislike about your new country?

LO: I love how safe it is. It’s a great place to bring up children. The education system, as well as healthcare, is great too.

I do not like the cold winter but I have adapted to it.

BCT: What did you like and dislike about Benoni?

LO: I liked that school friends were close by and it was easy to visit each other; I enjoyed going to Homestead Dam.
