UPDATE: Great North accident victim still suffering effects of crash

The woman who was critically injured in a multiple-vehicle accident involving a police vehicle on March 6 was probably only weeks away from emigrating to the United Kingdom (UK).

But now Maureen Flemming’s future is uncertain, according to her friend of 40-odd years, Vivien Smith.

Police have also not brought the guilty party to account for the crash.

The 69-year-old accident victim was involved in a five-vehicle crash at the intersection of Great North Road and Webb Street.

Four months after the incident, Flemming is being cared for at a frail care home in Fairleads, her estranged son being her only family in South Africa.

Her UK-based brother’s daughter is ill, so he cannot be with her.

“Maureen will never ever be the same again,” said Smith.

“She was full of life, now she is just a shell.”

Smith said her friend was finalising her husband’s will when the accident occurred.

The matter would have been finalised within weeks.

“Ideally, Maureen should be back with her family in the UK, but she can’t and I don’t know when she will be able to travel,” said Smith.

Maureen sustained severe head injuries and has only recently started walking with the help of a walking ring.

Smith said her friend suffers from memory loss and is not fully aware of what happened to her.

“It is a terribly sad situation,” she said.

Smith said she last received feedback from the police officer handling the case on June 5.

“Surely someone has to answer?”

Const Zama Madonda, of the Benoni SAPS, said the matter is under investigation.

“Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be sent to court for a decision,” said Madonda.
