Gender-based violence under the spotlight

American actor, poet, musician and social activist Antonio David Lyons visited the Sibikwa Art Centre on July 1.

Lyons’ visit was part of the ‘We Are Here’ workshop, a one-man play about gender-based violence.

The organisation conducts drama-based workshops that help foster a conversation around identity, masculinity, gender-based violence, HIV/Aids and teaches artists how to put on a solo performance.

Lyons shared his thoughts on gender-based violence.

“It must stop! Now!” said Lyons.

The workshop aims to educate men and boys about gender-related issues and to provide them with effective communication tools to resolve conflict and to develop emotional intelligence.

“We want to build awareness; we want to help young people to think about different ways to address and find solutions on how to deal with gender-based violence,” he said.

According to Selaelo Maseko, a United States Consulate, the American Embassy wanted to use Lyons as a tool to educate others on the issue.

“These talks highlight the role of men working together to protect women and children,” said Maseko.
