Entrepreneur bags a good idea

For some, the wheelie bin refuse removal has become a nightmare, but for entrepreneur Donovan van der Walt, it is a dream come true.

Van der Walt is the founder and managing director of an environmental company called Green Key Environmental (Pty) Ltd.

This company provides a service to areas of Benoni to remove refuse (general waste, not rubble and so on) in plastic bags at R10 a bag.

The areas of service are Farrarmere, Northmead, Rynfield, Morehill, Western Extension, Lakefield, Airfield, Alphen Park, Northvilla and the surrounding areas.

“With regards to informal settlements, a site assessment, per area, will need to take place,” said van der Walt.

“We can offer once-off, site clean-ups and our main focus is recycling and reducing the amount of waste sent to a landfill.”

Not only will the refuse be removed, recycled goods will be recycled and report-backs will be submitted.

“Residential complexes/estates will sign service agreements with us, which includes recycling, excess waste removal, street cleaning, once-off clean-ups, environmental reports and impact reports,” he said.

Free standing, residential properties need to phone for collection and contracts can be arranged per property.

“We will work on a cash basis for free-standing residential properties (cash on delivery),” he added.

For the moment, the refuse will be dumped at both local dumps and landfill sites until the company’s “zero general waste to landfill solution” is operative.

Community members who are interested in having their refuse removed privately can contact van der Walt on 081 756 1513, or donovan@greenkeyenviro.co.za

The company’s Facebook page is Green Key Environmental or @greenkeyenviro.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will still charge the refuse removal rates based on Ekurhuleni Metro’s Solid Waste By-Laws Council Resolution MI 192/2001 dated 29 November 2001 (date of commencement March 6 2002), Chapter 2 (Council’s Service) section 3 and 5.

“This implies therefore that the refuse removal charges/ fees still need to be paid even where the public have chosen to have their refuse removed privately,” said the EMM’s spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
