Homestead comes alive with martial arts festival

The Festival of Martial Arts, which was held at Homestead Dam on June 17, seeks to enhance self-defence and fitness.

The moral of the day was “for the community, by the community”and saw various community members join the programme either to teach or to learn about a range of martial arts.

Organisers of the event, Terence Teraine and Candice Hitchcox, had invited several instructors to be available from 7am to 5pm.

The programme consisted of yoga, kat-fit, flow poi, sun and moon, jiu-jitsu, aiki-do/aiki-cqc, Zumba fitness, aiki-jitsu/aiki-mma, Africa Thai boxing, aiki-sambo/aiki-jane, qi-gong, tai-chi, tai-jian, tai-dao, kobu-jutsu, pilates and kettlebells, kung-fu and chi-na, iron core and ironsole, taekwondo, judo/ boxing and karate.

Teraine and Hitchcox taught the Aiki-sambo while Melissa Kinchin (sensei) taught ju-jitsu which is traditional Japanese arts on a mat.

“It teaches one about respecting each other on the mat. It also teaches honour, discipline and self-defence,” Kinchin said.

VIP Boxing member Harry Ramogoadi said boxing helps to build confidence and emphasised that boxing was about helping yourself and the other person to become better. He said it was not about punching the next person as it was more generally believed.

“It also helps with discipline, self-control, gives you a purpose, training, knowing your opponent, body fitness, self-defence and anger management,” Ramogoadi added.

Ana-Lisa Romao who also attended the event, has been teaching Zumba for six years.

“Zumba is a latin dance and a fun fitness workout for anyone. It is interval training without even realising it.” she said.

Another instructor present at the event was Isaac Maila, who taught Chinese Tai Chi8 and Chi Kong.

“This consists of Japanese Kobu-jitsu teaching self-defence,” Maila said.

“Tai Chi is the strengthening and stretching of the muscles and body.”
