Ceronio still to be involved at Benoni High

Jake Ceronio has retired from his post as Benoni High School principal.

His last day as head of the school will be on Friday, June 30.

“I actually retired a year-and-a-half ago, but was asked to stay on, so I did,” he said.

Ceronio (67) started as deputy principal at the school around 1992.

He was appointed as principal in 2005.

“I’m going to miss the school, the children and the staff. You can’t spend 25 years at a school and not feel sad to leave. We always refer to it as the Benoni High family.

“It’s been a large part of my life and the biggest part of my career, so it will be hard to let go.

“I’ve seen a lot of development at the school, not only in the children but also the buildings, sports and the recent tertiary education option we started offering.”

Ceronio said he will remain involved at the school to some extent, as he will head Oakdale University, the tertiary education centre opened at Benoni High School in January.

In addition to running Oakdale University, Ceronio will go to KwaZulu-Natal in August, where he will run courses for principals and deputy principals.

The educator started his career at Nigel High School in 1973.

He left the school in 1984 to become a head of department at Sir John Adamson High School in Johannesburg.

His next stop was Benoni High where he’s been ever since.

Ceronio feels it will be a big adjustment to have his weekends wide open as he spent most Saturdays attending the many sports or cultural events in which the school was involved.

“I am sad to leave the school, but I’m sure they will appoint the perfect candidate to take over from me and I will be watching from the sidelines, cheering the school on as it continues to grow,” he added.

Deputy principal Glen van der Westhuizen will take over as acting principal.
