UPDATE: Five arrested for Benoni protests, rubber bullets fired

Five people have been arrested and rubber bullets have been fired at some of this morning’s protestors in Benoni, police say.

Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander, said the approved march derailed.

“There are splinter groups that started chaos,” said Subbiah.

He said public order policing fired rubber bullets and arrested five people for looting.

Police are monitoring the situation.

Subbiah said police reinforcements from the provincial SAPS will assist local police.
