Children claim victims of mugging

On June 14, four children were allegedly mugged in Crystal Park.

According to Sibongile Njiyela, her children walk to and from Crystal Park Primary School and Noorderlig Gekombineerde Skool daily.

Njiyela said the children were walking on Clydesdale Street when a Quantum taxi drove slowly towards them.

A man climbed out of the taxi and pointed a knife at them and demanded their cellphones, before driving off.

“The children were scared and shaken about what happened,” said Njiyela.

According to Njiyela, her husband, Thomas Njiyela, took the children to the Crystal Park Police Station to open a case.

“They were not assisted and they couldn’t open a case without information from the cell phone service providers,” said Njiyela.

“We told them that the phones are old and they were not a concern, but the children’s lives were.”

According to the Crystal Park Primary School principal Kwena Poopedi, he is not aware of muggings involving his learners.

“We normally have one police officer who deals with crime related to our school,” he said.

According to WO Rudi Sieberts, communications officer of the Crystal Park Police Station, he had not heard of the case but said he will look into the matter.
