Quick reaction from motorist leads to arrest in Woburn Avenue

Police, with the help of a community member, managed to foil a car theft on June 20.

Two men, aged 29 and 43, were arrested for attempted theft of the motor vehicle and possession of dagga, in Woburn Avenue, at around 2.20pm.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said it is alleged that a woman driving a Hyundai Tuscon parked her car outside an examination centre in the street and went inside.

“Next to where she parked, a woman was waiting in her car for her aunt to finish writing an exam at the centre,” said Sekele.

“This woman spotted two suspicious men close to the Hyundai. One of them opened the vehicle and the other loitered around to check if they’d been seen by anyone.”

The woman drove to the nearest petrol station where she came across a police vehicle and told them what had happened.

Benoni SAPS sector managers, WO Kenny Magagula, WO Jaco Myburgh and Sgt Shunimugum Alladipan, rushed to the scene and managed to arrest the two.

The suspects were detained at the Benoni Police Station and will appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.

Station commander Brig Johan Jacobs thanked the community member for her quick response to the crime and applauded the sector managers for a job well done.
