Man robbed in Northmead Square parking lot

A man was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money in the parking area at Northmead Square this morning (June 12).

The incident happened at about 10.15am.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, the Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said a businessman driving a white Ford Ranger double cab bakkie parked at the centre and spoke on the phone in the vehicle for about five minutes after he had stopped.

After the conversation on his phone, he noticed four men in a grey Audi.

Sekele said three of the men – two armed with rifles and one with a handgun – exited the car and asked the man in the bakkie to hand over a bag containing cash.

The spokesperson said the victim was going to bank an undisclosed of money at one of the centre’s banks.

No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

No arrests have been made.

A case of armed robbery will be opened.

“The customer has been noted as a regular shopper and we apologise for the uncalled experience and we will endeavor to ensure that this does not happen again,” Northmead Square said in a statement.
