Lifelong learning for this superwoman

“School is never finished”, are the words that constantly ring in Poppy Masinga’s mind.

New PHD graduate Masinga completed her doctorate in Social Work in April and recalls that her biggest challenge during the five years of study was learning how to balance family, work and her studies.

While working as a lecturer in Social Work at the University of Pretoria, Masinga designed a characteristic educational, social and emotional skills development programme for high schools.

The Rynfield resident hopes the programme will be improved and implemented in more schools.

With two Master’s degrees in Social Work and an Honours degree in Psychology, Masinga says she is setting a standard for her children and hopes that despite all the challenges, people never give up on trying to reach their goals.

“I feel a sense of accomplishment because I set the goal to complete my studies,” said Masinga. “My family is very proud of me.”

Masinga added that obtaining a degree was not easy but is achievable. She admitted that she couldn’t have done it without the support of her family even though she was disciplined and dedicated.
