Lakefield residents question tree cutting

Lakefield residents consider the trees a landmark for the area, but questioned why the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has been cutting them down.

“Lakefield is known for its trees,” said Glynis Holdsworth, one of the directors at the Lakewest Resident’s Association.

“The municipality cuts the trees and does not replace them.”

According to Holdsworth, the trees should be trimmed and not cut.

Another resident, Natalie Morris, said the massive trees have been around for several years and also questioned why these trees are being cut.

“The City of Ekurhuleni only cut the trees when it receives complaints about them,” said EMM spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, in response to the query by the City Times.

“In this case, a resident on Sunny Road complained and our horticulturist went out to do an inspection.

“It was found that the trees were damaging the wall and they were lifting the paving, therefore they were taken down.”
