Illegal dumping continues to be a problem

Ward 29 councillor Haseena Ismail is urging businesses and residents to reduce the amount of illegal dumping in the Actonville area.

Ismail also mentioned that informal recyclers contribute to the problem when they fail to recycle everything they collect.

“Anything and everything gets dumped,” said Ismail.

According to Ismail, the Department of Waste and Environment came to clean up in one of the areas in Actonville on May 28.

“Please refrain from dumping,” she said.

Areas that are most affected by the dumping are Lancaster Road, Karolia Street, Lowton Street, Soma Street, Mistry Street and Mia Street.

“We must work together to keep the streets clean,” she said.

“We need to encourage residents to recycle.”

Ismail said residents need to take care of their environment together.

According to Ismail, a person can be fined R2 000 if they are found dumping illegally.

Residents can report illegal dumping to her or to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).

“Residents need to adhere to the by-laws of illegal dumping,” she said.

Ismail said she would be issuing letters to residents stating what the by-laws are and why they should adhere to them.

According to Ismail, Actonville has a legal dumping site on Daya Street.
