DoSD aims to empower learners

The Gauteng government aimed to empower learners on Friday (May 26) as they hosted “Take A Boy and Girl Child To Work Day.”

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (DoSD) in conjunction with the Cell C foundation hosted the event at The Lakes Hotel with the hope of assisting learners to make informed career choices.

This event follows the build-up of Child Protection Week (May 28 to June 4).

“At this event, the learners were educated about bursary choices, universities and careers,” said Leonie van der Merwe who spoke on behalf of the acting head of department at the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Makhukhu Mampuru.

“We also invited learners to teach them about gender equality.”

Van der Merwe said the aim of the event is to teach children the value of who they are and to emphasise that education is the key to the future.

Michelle Monnana (18) wants to become an actress or lawyer after she completes high school school.

Michelle Monnana (18), a learner at Blue Eagle High School, Randburg, encouraged other learners to attend such events.

“Through these presentations I learned more about future opportunities for me,” she said.

“Today was helpful because I learned to never give up and to study hard.”

Monnana wants to become an actress after school.

“My second choice is law, but after today, I know that I need to research my career choices and take action in pursuing those careers,” she said.
