AVOID: R21 south closed following fatal truck accident

Nick Dollman, spokesman for Netcare 911, said the overturned truck was lying across the highway

The driver of a truck was killed this morning when his vehicle overturned on the R21 south near the Atlas Road off-ramp in the Pomona area.

The fatal accident, which happened at about 5am, is causing severe traffic delays.

Nick Dollman, spokesman for Netcare 911, said the overturned truck was lying across the highway.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the truck was travelling towards Pretoria when it crashed over the centre barrier and obstructed the highway in the opposite direction. Fortunately no other vehicles were involved,” Dollman said.

Rescue crews from Netcare 911 and Ekurhuleni EMS worked together and used specialised equipment, including the Jaws of Life, to access the wreck of the cab. The driver, who alone in the vehicle, was located but sadly he had died as a result of the severe crash. He was about 50 years old.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police were also at the scene to investigate the incident.

Three lanes are currently closed and peak morning traffic is severely affected. Motorists are advised to expect long delays and to avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes.

The R21 heading towards Pretoria is also slower than normal due to spectator value. Expect delays and approach with caution.
