No evidence to suggest Laerskool Rynfield girl was in danger

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele has warned parents to educate their children about conversing with strangers.

The warning follows an alleged incident outside the premises of Laerskool Rynfield, which was brought to the school’s attention on Wednesday (May 17).

According to the principal, Walter Janse van Rensburg, a Grade Three learner said she stopped a fellow learner from getting into a car with a man she did not know.

“The man allegedly told the learner that he was sent to pick the child up from school,” he said.

“However, the Grade Three learner cannot identify the victim.”

During an investigation, the learner was taken through the classrooms, but she could not identify the girl who was apparently approached by a stranger.

Van Rensburg said once the incident was reported, the school did not take it lightly because the safety of children is important.

“We immediately began investigating the alleged incident, but the victim has not been identified in the school, nor do our cameras outside of the school reveal any incident happening,” he added.

However, as an extra precaution, van Rensburg said they have improved security.

“As soon as the alleged incident was brought to our attention, we sent out a warning SMS to parents,” he said.

“We also asked security companies to patrol more in the area and we are in the process of hiring another security guard.”

Sekele added that children need to be taught who to talk to, and who to leave school premises with.

“We visit schools to teach children about the dangers of talking to strangers, but parents need to educate them as well,” Sekele added.
