Ordinary day turns into a wildlife rescue effort

A woman has been praised for rescuing an injured bird, a swift.

“It was very cold and it couldn’t help itself,” said Danielle Roodt.

The Farrarmere resident said her helper, Anna Ncube, picked the injured swift up on the bridge on Voortrekker Street, on May 11.

“She carried the bird all the way from the bridge, near Lakeside Mall, to Farrarmere,” said Roodt.

“She picked up the bird because she knows that I’m a volunteer at the Wildlife in Crisis centre,” said Roodt, who then took it to Phillip Viviers at the wildlife centre.

He took care of it before it was taken to a clinic to be monitored.

According to Judy Davidson, of Wildlife in Crisis, the swift was doing well and would be released back into the wild after about two weeks.

“It still needs to gain weight and start flying again,” said Davidson.

She added the bird would be released into a flock of swifts.

“We will take the bird to KwaZulu-Natal,” said Davidson.

The organisation commended Ncube on her good deed on their Facebook page.

“We need a million more people like you that care enough to stop and help a tiny swift,” the post read.
