School goes six months without water – DA
Bekekayo Intermediate School in Bapsfontein, Ekurhuleni, has been without water for the past six months, according to the DA.
According to Khume Ramulifho, the party’s Gauteng shadow Member of the Mayoral Committee for Education, learners have no choice but to relieve themselves in the school yard, as the toilets cannot be flushed.
“Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi must act immediately to ensure that the school borehole pump is fixed and water is reconnected to the school,” said Ramulifho.
“The school environment and the dignity of the pupils has been compromised.
“The situation that the learners are faced with is unhygienic and unsanitary.”
Ramulifho added that every child has the right to a decent quality education, clean environment and access to water.
“The MEC must task his department with responding timeously to urgent matters affecting school learners in the province,” said Ramulifho.
“The health and wellbeing of learners in Gauteng cannot be compromised due to the failure of service delivery.”
The DA will submit questions to the Gauteng Legislature to ascertain the following:
• How many schools in the province do not have running water?
• How many schools in the province do not have proper sanitation?
• How many complaints has the Department of Education received regarding poor sanitation and shortage of water in the schools around the province?
• What is the turnaround time for the Department of Education in responding to the school’s complaints?
The Gauteng Education Department was approached for comment, but none had been received at the time of publishing.
