Benoni expat eligible to play for New Zealand in two years

Chad Bowes (24) plans to further his cricketing career in New Zealand.

He still holds onto his dream of playing professional cricket, which he has been working towards since the age of five.

BCT: Tell us about your time in Benoni?

CB: I lived in Benoni for 13 years and attended Tom Newby School, where I was deputy head boy in 2005.

My family moved to Durban in 2006, where I attended Kearsney College for my high school years.

I was prefect in matric and played first team cricket, hockey and soccer at the school.

BCT: What are your memories of Benoni?

CB: My childhood in Benoni was awesome.

I spent it growing up with my sister.

We used to ride our bikes from our house in Northmead around the corner to the BP to get snacks.

My dad, Craig, and I would play cricket for hours in the afternoons in the long driveway.

We would go to Homestead Dam and feed the ducks on Sunday afternoons.

I enjoy playing golf and played my first ever round at The Lake Club Benoni.

BCT: You now play for Canterbury Cricket, in New Zealand, but how has your cricketing career grown?

CB: I made my first class debut at the age of 18 for KwaZulu-Natal.

In my second first class innings I scored my maiden first class century at Kingsmead, in Durban, against Gauteng.

I have since played over 40 first class games.

In 2012 I captained the South Africa u-19 cricket team at the World Cup in Australia.

I used to open the batting with Protea Quinton de Kock.

In 2015, after not achieving what I wanted to achieve in South Africa, I looked elsewhere to ply my trade – I found New Zealand.

I have spent 18 months in New Zealand, but have already played a full season of franchise cricket – something I wasn’t able to achieve in my entire professional career in South Africa.

In two years’ time I will be eligible to play cricket for New Zealand.

BCT: Do you enjoy living in New Zealand?

CB: The country is amazing.

Everybody is happy and enjoys life.

There is no drama behind the scenes and the lifestyle is good for families.
