UPDATE: Guards wounded in armed robbery

A case of attempted murder and robbery has been opened at the Brakpan Police Station, after a shooting at a local business on Apex Road.

The incident occurred on May 14 at around 11pm.

Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Capt Pearl van Staad said, according to the security guards, an unknown vehicle passed by the business.

After a few minutes, three men walked towards the gate.

“The three robbers tried pushing the gate and when they realised that the gate was locked, they shouted at the guards to open for them,” said van Staad.

“One of the guards walked towards the gate and asked if he could help.”

Van Staad added that one of the three men produced a firearm and shot the guard approaching him, while the other guard tried to lock himself inside the guard room.

“However, the men had already gained entry into the premises and demanded keys to open the business,” she said.

“When the other guard said they didn’t have the keys, they also shot him.”

One of the guards sustained a wound to the head and the other was wounded on his upper body.

Their condition was not known on Tuesday morning.

The robbers took off with a firearm, cellphones, wallets and keys.

No arrests have been made.
