Quick reaction by police leads to arrest of armed robber in Farrarmere

A 19-year-old man was arrested shortly after committing a robbery on Great North Road, in Farrarmere.

The incident occurred on May 6 at around 2.20pm.

According to Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele, it is alleged the complainant was waiting for his mother to open the gate for him.

“While waiting, he was approached by an unknown man who put a knife to his throat and demanded a cellphone,” said Sekele.

“The complainant did exactly as he was told and handed over the cellphone.”

The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Sekele added that the victim and his uncle went to search for the suspect but did not find him.

On their way back, they spotted a police vehicle which they stopped to inform the police about the incident.

Quick response by Sgt Louwtjie Bekker and Const Kenneth Mantsha led to the arrest of the man at the corner of Kei and Great North roads.

The man was still in possession of the cellphone and the knife used to commit the crime.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Benoni SAPS.

He appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on May 8 and was remanded in custody.

He will make his next appearance on May 10.
