Death trap barrier fixed at last

Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail is glad that some Actonville flats are receiving attention, which she said is long overdue.

Shock hit the community of Actonville in May last year when the late Thabiso “Abram” Sootho fell to his death and Mthandazo “Prayer” Hanees was left injured, after the two fell from the fifth floor of the Karachi Court building.

According to an eyewitness, Olivia Erasmus, the two were playfully tackling each other against the wall that then broke, causing them both to fall from the seven-storey building.

After almost a year, maintenance has begun in Karachi Court.

“As ward councillor, I have escalated the bad conditions of the flats in Actonville,” said Ismail.

“I am glad to report that the project of [repairing] the balustrade at Karachi Court started on April 18.”

According to Ismail, several meetings were held with the relevant departments and residents to ensure the safety of all, during and after the upgrade.

“The necessary notifications were put up and the road [is] cordoned off while work is happening,” Ismail said.

“I also requested that everything must be done to ensure the balustrades are 100 hundred per cent safe in the long term for residents.”

Ismail added that, to ensure the balustrades are strong and safe, 12mm bars are being welded on the mesh and channel panels are used on top for added security and safety.

The contractors are upgrading the flat from the seventh floor down.

“The project is expected to finish by June 30 if everything goes according to plan,” she said.

“The external refurbishment of Karachi and Delhi courts is planned to start in July, when the new financial year kicks in.”
