Market’s return will be welcomed

Some stall holders of the popular Bunny Park Craft Market have taken a financial knock, according to organiser Janine Richardson.

The market, which is temporarily being held at the Bokkie Park in Boksburg, is closed due to the park’s renovations.

“Even though we are looking forward to the new park, the market is a source of income to some residents in Benoni,” said Richardson.

“A lot of them need the income and the park being closed has a financial impact on them.”

Richardson added that some of the market beneficiaries are elders and they can’t commute to Boksburg.

The Bunny Park has been closed since March 1, for the start of the facility’s revamp and it will remain closed until at least September.

Vivienne Ridyard of the Benoni Trefoil Guild said the closure of the market doesn’t affect them that much, but it does hurt the people who make a living out of it.

The Benoni Trefoil Guild helps various organisations and institutions; the members of the guild have a stall at the Bunny Park Craft Market every month, where they sell knitted and sewn items, as well as donated goods, to raise funds.

“I feel like there should have been an alternative to hold the market here in Benoni because not everyone can go to market in Boksburg,” said Ridyard.

“However, we are looking forward to the renovations and we hope more people will be drawn into attending the market.”

Phase Two of the park’s refurbishment is planned to start by July and last until September or October.
