Mess greets ratepayers

Broken windows, litter, a rock taking the place of a manhole cover and trees growing out of paving are what greets visitors to the Benoni Customer Care Centre facility on Elston Avenue.

The City Times recently photographed a disused toilet building on the premises on April 21, which is to the left of the Customer Care Admin building, which appears not to have been used for years.

The sunken toilets in front of the Treasury Building were also locked when the City Times inspected the area.

Ward 73 councillor Sinethemba Matiwane said the toilets in the Benoni Library, Treasury and Customer Care Admin buildings are sufficient for the public, when he was asked whether the toilets to the left of the Customer Care Admin building should be reopened.

“I do not know why somebody would want to use that toilet,” said Matiwane.

He agreed that they should be kept clean, when asked how they were allowed to fall into a state of neglect.

Western Extension resident Mary Goby said the toilets are in a “disgusting” state.

“There is a need for them, but we need somebody there during the day to stop vandalism,” she said.

The metro did not respond to questions at the time of publishing.
