Library computers wil be replaced

Computers for the public’s use at the Benoni Library have apparently not worked for years.

According to a resident who didn’t want to be named, the computers have been down for at least three to four years.

“None of them work,” she said.

There are six public computers in total at the Benoni Library.

Ward 73 Clr Sinethemba Matiwane said: “I haven’t received any complaints about the computers, but I will look into the matter.”

According to one of the workers at the library, the computers have not being working for about six years.

“They already needed repair in the first month that they were installed,” she said.

According to the worker, IT specialists pinned the problem on faulty cables.

“It’s not only the computers here; the computers at the Daveyton Library also don’t work,” she said.

“It’s not a nice feeling to turn people away when they ask to use a computer.”

According to the municipality the public computers are in the process of being replaced.

“The City of Ekurhuleni is in the process of installing new machines to make this library more efficient for all who use it,” said Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The metro said communication will be sent to residents once the installation is complete.

The City Times asked its Facebook audience whether they use the Benoni landmark.

Several people said they no longer take out books because they are dirty.

“I go there regularly,” said Lydia Pienaar Jankowitz.

“The books are dirty, but it’s still better than buying books at today’s prices.”
