Residents disappointed at meeting postponement

Residents of Pauline Davis Court and Deneys Conradie Residentia feel their concerns are not being taken seriously by the metro, after meetings with the Human Settlements Department have been repeatedly postponed.

Two meetings between Eddie Nkomotse, manager of the Human Settlements Department in eastern Ekurhuleni, Clr Sinethemba Matiwane (Ward 73) and residents of the council-owned flats, were scheduled for April 5.

Both were postponed indefinitely after the mayor called for all the metro’s office staff to attend a feedback meeting at Boksburg Stadium on the day.

Matiwane said he has tried to organise a meeting between Nkomotse, himself and the flat residents since February, but these are postponed by Nkomotse every time.

“I can’t give the residents answers on all the issues regarding the flats as I’m a representative of council, not from the department itself,” Matiwane said.

“I want the department themselves to comment on all the issues directly.”

He said the following matters have to be discussed:

• Lifts at both flats

• Election of committees for both flats

• Rental with regards to change in financial status

• Market-related rental

• Security

• Caretakers.

Charlie Vermaak, a resident in Pauline Davis Court, was unhappy with the cancellation of the meeting.

“They cancel the meetings every time. Why? What is going on?” Vermaak asked.

“We make time to be here and attend the meeting, but then it’s wasted.

“I wonder if the people from the department would put their parents in this place, with all its issues, and whether they’d give it more attention then.”

Sampie Rautenbach, another resident of the flats, said he would push for a meeting between himself, Matiwane and the mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, to discuss the items which would have been tackled in the meeting.

Annatjie Pieters lives in Deneys Conradie Residentia.

“It’s terrible how poorly the building is maintained,” she said.

“Why can’t they make a plan for the old people living here?”

Nkomotse could not be reached for comment at the time of publishing.
