Piketberg artist comes to Benoni

Anthea Delmotte stayed in Benoni during her latest exhibition, A state of survival, which was her first solo exhibit in Johannesburg.

The artist is from Piketberg, in the Western Cape.

She said art isn’t something she ever thought about, it just happened.

“My father sketched and painted sometimes and my grandmothers did crafts. They inspired me to make art,” she said.

Delmotte has had her hand in several art forms, including fashion design, crafts, interior design, sketching and painting.

In 1998 she moved to Piketberg and started to focus exclusively on painting.

Delmotte’s Benonian friend, Adele Steyn said: “It’s incredible how sustainable she lives and her art has been the subject of so many articles and studies.”

Delmotte said the exhibit, A state of survival is meant to challenge people’s mindset of conforming and being conditioned by society.

“It’s important to be objective when we observe the world around us, not to judge others,” she said.

“I’m an environmentalist and wanted to show the beauty of nature with these paintings.”

A state of survival will be held at Halifax Art, in Randburg, from April 4 till 18.
